Week 4

I can't believe the summer vegetables are starting to show up already, but I'm definitely glad they're here!

Weeks 2 & 3 - catching up!

Ugh....getting behind already, but we were away on vacation and I've been extremely sick for the past week so at least I feel like I have a good excuse.

Since we were away for a week, we picked up two shares during week 2, here's the picture:

The picture is of the first share we picked up. The second one was almost exactly the same.

My favorite recipe was a delicious spinach and strawberry salad, with feta cheese, sliced almonds and green onions.

Last week's favorite recipe

My favorite dish that I cooked last week also happens to be the easiest one I cooked. Although the little turnips are delicious raw, they are fantastic cooked too. The snap peas and turnips sort of reminded me of peas and onions, so I thought I'd steam them together. Here's the "recipe":

1 bunch turnips
2 cups snap peas
margarine or butter
salt
pepper

Cut the turnips into 4-8 wedges (try to get them to be about the same thickness). Place turnips in steaming basket placed over a boiling pot of water and let cook for 5-7 minutes or until turnips are almost cooked through. Add the snap peas to the steaming basket and continue to cook for another 3-5 minutes, or until the peas are cooked. Toss vegetables with butter or margarine (we use Smart Balance), salt and pepper.

Even though I didn't cook the peas quite enough, this was delicious! The turnips become rich and creamy when they're cooked, and were a great compliment to the crunchy peas.

Tonight I cooked up this week's turnips with last week's spinach, and what was left of last week's arugula. I just sauteed them in some oil with some garlic, salt, pepper and a little nutmeg.

Week 1 2007 is finally here!

I'm happy to say that last week was our first pickup at the farm for this year! We are more excited this year now that we are "experienced" CSA-ers. Last year I was mostly nervous about what to do with all of the vegetables, but we managed to eat or preserve almost everything.

Our full share included this week:
radishes
turnips
baby bok choi
mixed salad greens
arugula
spinach

U-Pick:
the most beautiful strawberries I've ever seen!
snap peas

Bought:
london broil
whole milk yogurt

It was great to have the snap peas and strawberries the first week this year, in addition to the great salad veggies!
