The blog has been very sadly neglected, but I have been making some delicious recipes lately that I really want to share.
A quick update on the CSA situation - two years ago we cancelled our membership. Not because we were unhappy with it, or because Quiet Creek wasn't doing a great job. We just found that there were many other wonderful farms, farm stands and farmers' markets in our area that we weren't able to buy from because we always had more than enough from the CSA (even after switching from a full to a half share). There were also some items that our CSA didn't grow that we missed. Finally, no matter how hard we tried, there always seemed to be times during the year when we just couldn't keep up with the CSA and ended up having to throw out some of the beautiful food. This always broke our hearts, and we have decided we prefer buying "on demand" as opposed to the CSA model.
We are extremely fortunate to live near a wonderful farm stand called Eagle Point that is open six days a week from April through December. Produce is clearly marked as "local" or "our own" (grown on the owner's farm), and they also sell milk, eggs, cheese, and yogurt, and fresh bread on Fridays and Saturdays. We refer to Eagle Point as our local "grocery store" and we love that we can stop by any time during the week to pick up any extras we may need.
Winters have always been hard for us - going back to grocery store shopping after months of eating fresh, local food was a difficult adjustment. Last year we made a few purchases from Pure Sprouts that provides free delivery to your doorstep for orders of at least $25. This year many of our local farm markets are staying open through the winter. The Emmaus Farmers' Market is open every other Sunday from 10-12 through the winter. In fact, we're headed there this morning to pick up a few things. It's so great to be able to stay in touch with our farmer friends through the colder months, and I really hope this is a trend that continues.
